Interpreting Your Scores
0 to 5. Your experience of disrespect is significant, and you may feel ostracized and perhaps even targeted. You and your work are not appreciated, and you have little, if any, influence with your team members and the decisions made. You are likely concerned—and rightfully so—about your job security. Why do you think that others don’t respect you? Are there things that you have done or said—or not done—that have led others to view you as incompetent or as a TeamMe player? Do you feel that others are jealous of you? We encourage you to have some serious and authentic conversations with yourself and then with your coworkers to better understand these issues.
6 to 10. It is likely that you feel respected by some team members but not by others. You respect those who show you respect, and, thus, you engage and work collaboratively with those individuals. Reflect on the history of your relationships with those in the disrespect category. Did respect ever exist? If so, what incident or incidents caused that to change? (Typically, there is one specific trigger event.) Regardless of how long ago the incidents occurred, we recommend that you take responsibility for cleaning up the relationships and initiate a conversation with those individuals. If you don’t, the relationships will not change, and yours will not be a SuperTeam.
11 to 15. You feel respected by and you respect those on your team. You feel connected to and engaged with your fellow team members and team leader. Such relationships lead to regular communication, collaboration, and mutual support, which results in high team functioning and effectiveness. Appreciate these relationships, but don’t take them for granted. Continue to foster a culture of respect in your organization. Can you use the influence that comes with respect to improve interpersonal conflict between other team members?
